Designing for High-Value Cases
Brill Legal Group is a criminal defense firm whose founding partner, Peter Brill, is often sought nationally for his knowledge and input on cases in the news.
When Brill Legal Group partnered with CLM, their goal was to expand their practice without diluting their ability to treat each client as more than a number. The firm serves a wide swath of the geographic area surrounding Manhattan and faced the challenge of appealing to the varying demographics in those areas.
The firm wanted to focus on high-end clients and cases for whom it could provide individualized attention. It felt that its website did not adequately communicate the quality of the legal services it offers and wanted to remedy that issue.

Challenges: The new site needed to effectively highlight two core practice areas: criminal defense and professional license defense. It needed to emphasize results, quality of service and strength with a level of sophistication reflective of the firm's personality. We did this with:
Custom Illustration
When developing a visual aesthetic for the site, we use research and focus groups to help us understand how visitors respond emotionally to website imagery. This research revealed that photos of real attorneys or custom illustrations more strongly impacted visitors than stock.
Since one of the goals of the redesign was to convey the idea that Brill Legal Group was smarter and more capable than the competition, we decided to employ illustrations throughout the site to support informational content.
Since the lawyers wanted to be seen as a high-end boutique firm, our team decided to combine illustrations and journalistic-style photos to show visitors why they should trust the firm.
Long Form Pages
CLM invested substantial resources into enhancing Brill Legal Group's criminal law practice area pages and turning them into mini-landing pages. This included:
- Creating online guides
- Including simple interactive elements to keep visitors engaged
- Including graphic results
- Using testimonials as design elements
- Updating and monitoring pages to ensure they are current with changes in the law
These efforts have proved successful, with a 673% increase in conversions over the previous FindLaw site.
Client Testimonials
Because the attorneys at Brill Legal Group are great at what they do, plenty of clients are willing to offer testimonials to that effect. We incorporated typographic elements to make these testimonials an integral part of the design.
This included:
- Using large, bold quotes as content separators
- Incorporating quotes into slideshows
- Incorporating both short explicatory quotes and longer story-based testimonials
Leads are up across the board, and PPC leads are up 62 percent.
